Meet MATERIAL

After months of hard work I am thrilled to introduce my final project from my Spring 2014 class at FIT, magazine design. I aspire to work at a magazine company one day and this class was the perfect opportunity to exercise my creativity and show all I'd wish to contribute to a company such as Teen Vogue or Nylon (just to name a few). I titled my magazine "Material" leaving the title open to interpretation and featured some of my favorite people in it such as Leandra Medine, my favorite YouTube stars and Sophia Amoruso to truly reflect what my own magazine would be like. All of the articles are written by me with the exception of the interviews. I loved everything that went into making a magazine including the layout of the spreads, writing the articles and choosing the products and people to feature. Enjoy and feedback is appreciated!

Prom Going

Wearing: Basix Black Label dress, Nadri earrings

It is not too often that as a 17 year old high schooler I get to experience the allure of galas or red carpets (even though not many people get to experience these anyway). Prom is the one time where I can experience the thrill of fake eyelashes, dangling earrings and elaborate dresses. Because of this I wanted to feel as glamorous as possible. Hopefully in years to come nights like these will become frequent to me.

Birkenstock Happy

Wearing: Topshop jeans / Asos top / Birkenstock sandals

Ugly is the new cool in terms of shoes currently. Sneakers and now Birkenstocks can be found in just about every magazine you flip through and every fashion blog you click on. A few days ago I caved in to the Birkenstock trend, willingly of course. I cannot tell yet if these sandals are going to stay until next summer or I'll regret buying them by the end of August.. we'll see. But, for now, I'm loving them. The hardest part was deciding between styles: white, black, silver, suede, patent leather, leather, I can go on. Ultimately I settled for the silver leather, I have enough black and white shoes and wanted something different. I know this fad is a controversial one, so what do you think, are you a fan of Birks?

Fendi Fur Frenzy

Who would have ever thought that an $800 item would be mistaken as a stuffed toy by children? Fendi, widely known for their fur, decided to take the concept of fur to a whole other level on the Fall '13 runway. Handbags, wallets and keychains were reinvented to appear as over-priced stuff animals by Fendi to bring out the inner child in all of us. On the streets, the keychains, commonly known as "buggies" are the most the popular and appear on celebrities such as Cara Delevingne and Kylie Jenner. The best part about the keychains is that there is such a wide variety to choose from based on their expressions and eyebrow thickness. I have to say, some of these monster's eyebrow game's are strong. Though this just may be a phase, the fur monsters add just the right amount of personality to otherwise bland outfits.

Get the 30's look: Curley's Wife

of mice and men: curley's wife
The thing about wearing dresses from previous decades such as the flapper dress, shift dress, knee-legnth dress, etc. is that they are timeless. No matter what the "in" silhouette is at fast fashion retailers one can always resort to the classic aesthetic of decade-associated dresses. After seeing the play Of Mice and Men this weekend starring one of the ubiquitous Franco brothers, James, and Gossip Girl star, Leighton Meester I couldn't help but take notice of Leighton, or should I say Curley's wife's, dresses. What I found most astonishing was the fact that the character, in the book and play, is perceived as a promiscuous woman whilst wearing an ankle-length dress. If only those migrant workers saw what women wear today... Nonetheless I genuinely adored Leighton's character's choice of dress and thought about how women of today would put their own spin on the 30's silhouette. A pinstriped, collared, and buckled dress about a foot shorter than the original paired would oxford heels would be the modern version of Curley's wife's look.

Sheer Things

Wearing: Topshop top (can't find anything similar)  / American Apparel pants / H&M shoes (similar)

Another beautiful day in Manhattan calls for sheer organza. Funny story about this shirt actually... I purchased this shirt from Topshop on sale, joyfully brought it home and plopped my shopping bag right on the floor only to come back to the shirt shredded into pieces... thanks to my dog. After numerous phone calls back and forth with Topshop, I got a new shirt sent to me. I was determined. Though it is not the most comfortable shirt, it's actually very itchy, I cannot get over its color, boxiness and just everything about it. Ooh, the things we do for clothes.
