Normcore: the ultimate irony

Normcore
Your mom's turtlenecks, dad's Adidas slip-ons, and your little brothers sweatpants are all great options if you want to try out this new phenomenon. W Magazine featured an editorial in their August 2014 issue on normcore: the new era in fashion which is influenced by stay-at-home moms and soccer coach dads. Soo high fashion, I know. We have been seeing bits and pieces of this trend slowly come about between the Birkenstock rage and mom jeans fad (two of my personal favorites) but, recently, it is finally coming full circle. A typical normcore inspired look would consist of an oversized sweater (preferably high-necked), some type of ill-fitting pant, and slip-on sandals. Oh, and for an extra touch add some socks. Although the models in the W spread were wearing average priced Adidas on their feet and photographed in stereotypical looking kitchens and living rooms, they were wearing $60,000 Dior coats on top. Now, that's the kind of irony I like. Some may find this to be a bit contradictory, but, I on the other hand, think it is ingenius.

On Point

Wearing: Zara halter top, H&M kimono and shorts, Birkenstocks

These pictures were taken in lovely Cape May, New Jersey, the tip or point of NJ, hence the title. An all-white color combo is still going strong this summer for me, but, today, I decided to break it up with a gorgeous navy halter top from Zara. Then, of course, my silver Birks which add just the extra amount of pizazz needed. Between the flow-y, loose kimono and white, textured shorts this outfit gives off a very "beachy" vibe, yet is still appropriate for going out after a long day at the beach.

Lust List: July

This list is heavily influenced by my upcoming trip to California which will entail non-stop exploring of all that The Golden State has to offer. I anticipate that hurting feet from constant walking, the sun with 0% humidity and, overall, a lot of traveling will sum up my trip. Because of this it is a perfect time to finally buy the New Balance Classics I have been eyeing for the longest time and invest in a new purse (cough cough Philip Lim). Other things such as Warby Parker sunglasses will be great for when my contacts dry up or I just feel too lazy to put them in, a Nixon watch because my Casio watches are getting old, and the perfect lip color to touch up when I can't get back to my hotel room.

Peplums | Envelope skorts

Wearing: H&M top, Forever 21 skort, Windor Smith shoes, Urban Outfitters necklace

I love playing with shapes and silhouettes of clothing just as much as I enjoy mixing patterns and textures, and todays outfit is a prime example. I slightly hated myself for caving into the two trends I am wearing: peplums and the infamous envelope skirt. I always thought the peplum silhouette was way too girly for my liking and I was tired of seeing the same Zara-inspired skirt on every fashion blog I clicked on (despite how much I adored the piece). However, I caved and bought the two pieces. Who would have thought I'd pair them together? Surprisingly, these two pieces create an interesting outfit full of dimension.

Summer Silhouettes

Wearing: Asos shirt, Zara skirt, Windsor Smith shoes

This skirt is ideal for the summer between the crochet lace overlay and snow white tint to it. Its versatility allows me to dress it up or down and pair it with multiple items. Today I decided to throw over a boxy top adorned with one of my favorite prints on it, gingham. The top flows seamlessly into the silhouette of the skirt making the outfit appear as one, which is always great if aiming for an effortless look.
